The island is surrounded by a circle of small islets, most of them no more than rock peaks rising from the sea. The sea before and between the islets is dangerous and unreliable. The sudden shallows, sharp rocks and rough sea make it almost impossible for ships to come close, not to mention to reach the island, except in one spot. This spot is (nowadays) marked by a lighthouse.

Ships dock at the quay on a small island located on one of the rocky islets surrounding the island. This is because the inner sea is in places shallow and can’t be reached by larger ships. A bridge leads to the entrance area of Insular Insomnia.
